Rural Garden Destinations
We invite you to share the rare and diverse garden experiences of Durham Region.
Tour through acres of old growth forest, wooded settings, dazzling spring displays, spectacular fall colours, and extensive show gardens featuring; miniature and large roses, rhododendrons, daylilies, hosta, grasses, and much more while you discover rarely seen private gardens.
Stroll through spectacular beds of perennials planted in drifts of colour, or follow a woodland path through wildflowers and hosta. Sit in a gazebo and view a colour wheel of perennial blossoms, enjoy the rush of waterfalls, the serenity of ponds, the ambience of a covered bridge and the splendor of Century homes.
Find inspiration for your own garden paradise. Gather advice on species that flourish in the shade, plants that love the bright summer sun, and those who will prosper in part sun or shade locations. Benefit from years of gardening experience and meet gardeners who are willing, and eager, to share their experience and knowledge… and sometimes a little piece of the garden.
Expand your tour to include the some of the oldest and finest Heritage Gardens.
Begin with a visit to Parkwood, The R.S. McLaughlin Estate, a 12 acre property and home to one of Canada’s most significant Heritage Gardens. Hidden “garden rooms”, formal gardens, and reflecting pools are only a few features highlighting the work of prominent Canadian landscape architects from 1918-1936.
Visit the Tyrone United Church (1849) & Foundation Garden where you will find a beautiful community garden behind the historic church, dotted with benches and lampposts.
