The Municipality of Clarington is more than ‘just another pretty place’! Durham’s easternmost municipality contains breathtaking shoreline, farming communities, hamlets and the major population centers of Bowmanville, Courtice and Newcastle Village.
Accessible from historic Highway 2 and Highways 401 and 35/115, Clarington is convenient for scenic day trips, and offers a wide variety of accommodations for those who want to spend more time exploring the area.
From earthy to exotic, Clarington presents visitors with a selection of irresistible attractions. Enjoy picnics and nature walks at Darlington Provincial Park or along Clarington’s 17 km portion of the Waterfront Trail. You’ll find boat launches, marinas and a fishing charter, along with several conservation areas where brown and speckled trout are waiting. Cedar Park Resort is host to one of the area’s largest public swimming pools with heated waterslides and a unique children’s waterplay area.
Visiting in the winter? Enniskillen Conservation Area offers cross-country skiing, or head east to the Kirby Ski Hill for downhill skiing. If you prefer shopping as a winter sport, you’ll find historic downtown shopping districts, new malls, flea markets and auctions or visit the award-winning Archibald Orchards and Estate Winery.
Walk on the wild side! Visit Jungle Cat World in Orono and the Bowmanville Zoo (North America’s oldest privately owned zoo – established in 1919). For a countryside experience, the Durham Central Fair in Orono is an annual tradition that attracts thousands of visitors.
Built in 1846, the Tyrone Mill is one of Canada’s oldest working water-powered cider, saw and flour mills. The Clarington Museums preserve 19th century life for present and future generations to respect while the Clarington Visual Arts Center is a hotspot for exhibitions on everything from photography to pottery.
